Match Reports

1st Feb 09 -   Triumph   2 - 3  Pro Santos
                            (Townsend (2))

Today's game was played out in light to heavy snow with the temperature hovering about freezing with the wind chill taken into account.

Triumph it must be said played well although the result says different.

On the whole to go in 0-2 down at half time was an injustice as we had created 3 very good opportunities for scoring. Our defence had held strong with all of the back four playing with confidence and vigour. The midfield upto half time were in control hence the chances being created and we looked comfortable.

When the first goal came it was taken well by the Pro Santos forward but only came from a lapse in concentration by all who were defending, nevertheless we did not let our heads drop but continued to try, something that all the lads should be commended for.

The second goal came more from luck than judgement and the one goal that did not merit or reflect the way the game was going.

The second half saw a the third goal go in quite early, once again a very good strike from one of the Pro Santos central defenders from the edge of the box.

We persevered and kept to our task working our way back into the game. Townsend got his rewards with a brace. For the first time this season the opposing defender may not have had the measure of Townsend but certainly gave him a run for his money. On another day against a different player a brace would have been the minimum Townsend would have collected, but that is the way it goes.

In summary the positives were that we performed well, created chances and at least deserved a point but on the negative we didn't take our chances when we should have done, lapsed in concentration at critical moments and crucially didn't mark up or pick out their danger men when told to do so.

Next week is another game.

Well done today boys.

18th Jan 09 -   Ernsford Dynamos  2 - 7  Triumph
                            (Wood 3, Townsend 2, Miller 2)

Over the recent weeks I have refrained from writing reports as we were at a low ebb, however, after today's match I feel that one is fully justified.
In difficult conditions on a pitch that was extremely heavy and very large the boys immediately set their stall out. From the first whistle they took control of the midfield and camped in the Ernesford half creating chance after chance.

In reality we were probably in the opponents half for 85% of the first half.

With a slightly re-shuffled side that had 3 players missing and a re-organised look we gelled immediately. Stock had moved into midfield and was a revelation looking as if he had been unshackled and showing all the expression that has been missing from him. Miller was on top form releasing Fiander time after time, with the latter supplying 3 quality crosses that deserved more than they got. Grant was again fiesty on the left hand side of midfield both when going forward and defending.

Defensively we were sound with Rush once again finding the form that he had at the end of last season and both full backs, Bennell and Howarth doing a masterful job of keeping the opposition forwards at bay. Hale completed the back four in a new position for us playing at centre half again the timing of his tackle and his positioning ensured that as a unit were untroubled.

Wood the hat trick hero and Townsend with a brace kept the opposition on their toes at all times.

Ganley in goal had the hardest game of the first half purely for keeping concentration but when called on dealt with situations extremely well.

Well done to Tuson on his full debut and to Watts who probably had the hardest game coming on cold.

The second half started slower for Triumph as the boys took their foot off the gas and as a result Ernesford pulled 2 goals back by the end of the game.

Credit must be given to Ernesford as they kept going at it all through the game.

The most pleasing thing was not that we had won but the manner in which we had achieved it. The skill level was impressive given the ground conditions, the tackling had a bite that had been missing for some weeks and the enthusiasm was once again present.

Players were smiling!!

We must now take all these good points into our next game and take this as a kick start to the season.

WELL DONE ONE AND ALL

30th Nov -   Rugby Town  4 - 5  Triumph

In advance of a report from Rob, I'd just like to put up an "unofficial" match report as I think the boys deserve one.

The game was played on the immaculate new pitches at Rugby Town's ground, it started damp and ended in rain, but the entertainment kept everyone happy.

Rugby started the brightest, creating several very good chances in the first 15 minutes, which a combination of last ditch defending and some wasted chances kept the score goalless. The defence of Tom, Sean, Marcus & Kayman were kept busy and did their best to keep the opposition away from the Triumph goal. Rugby then got a penalty, which they blasted over the bar, and this seemed to wake Triumph up, and for the rest of the half the game moved end to end, but we did not create any real goal chances, Kai was at his best and made some excellent saves to keep Rugby out. Unfortunately as half time approached Rugby scored to give a deserved 1 - 0 lead at the break.

The second half started badly with Rugby getting an early goal from a defensive mix up, We were unlucky not to pull a goal back when a goal bound effort was cleared off the line after Luke had gone round the keeper. this was followed by a solo effort from a Rugby defender who ran thro the Triumph ranks and gave them a 3 - 0 lead.

At 3 - 0 down the boys are never out of a game, and we started to pass the ball around and moved the game into the Rugby half, with Kyle, Josh, Jacob and Dan running the midfield and  Charlie & Luke up front. This domination led to Luke crossing from the wing and Jacob heading in from close range. This was followed shortly by a break thro run by Jacob, and a low shot past the keeper. The pressure was maintained and within a few minutes, Luke was brought down in the box for a penalty. The penalty was saved well by the keeper, but Triumph reacted quickest and the ball was passed back into the centre, where Luke scored. 3 - 3.

The boys were not finished yet and to finish a fantastic 15 minutes, Luke broke thro, after more good work from the midfield, and beat the keeper to put Triumph into the lead, and much cheering from the sides.

There was still 10 min to play, and Rugby got themselves back into the game with several dangerous free kicks and attacks, one of which lead to a scrambled goal and brought us level again. A change of personnel added some energy to the team with Harry, Alex and a debut appearance for George.

In the last 5 mins either side could have won it, and as the last seconds approached, Dan took a long throw, which an unfortunate Rugby defender, knocked past his keeper to win Triumph the game.

A brilliant effort from both sets of boys, and a fantastic game to watch.

Mark.

2nd Nov -   Whitley  5 - 1  Triumph  (Cup Game)

Today’s game was played in cold and damp conditions on a sloping pitch where we were unfortunately over powered by a team from a division higher than ourselves.

Both Marc and myself had decided to alter the formation from the traditional 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 and had expressed to the boys to “just go out enjoy themselves and express themselves” this they did.

The game started with Triumph playing both against the wind and up hill but following an early conceded goal began to play with vigour and style. A formation that was unknown to our players seemed to suit them with the 3 defensive players dealing with the Whitley attack comfortably. The central midfield trio were at home controlling the middle of the park in numbers breaking down any danger dispossessing the opposition and setting free the wide men and the two front runners.

The fluency of the Triumph play and the amount of chances created belied the difference in leagues and for most of the first half Triumph looked like the red league team. Constantly Townsend and Wood aided by Miller caused problems with lively interactive play through the centre while Fiander made forays down the right flank. With Hale, Villette and Bennell being the disruptive influence within the midfield leaving Stock, Walker and Grierson to pick up the pieces at the back.

Unlike previous games this season we could not turn our pressure or chances into goals and as the half progressed Whitley always looked as if they would create problems for us. As with all games each side will take control of phases within the game Whitley did so 5 minutes before half time where they punished us twice.

Half time 3-0

Undeterred after the break Triumph again came out fighting and got their rewards pulling one back. Good interchange play between Villette and Wood allowed Wood to go on and score.

Triumph kept pressing but as we were pressing we were beginning to leave holes in the middle and at the back. Whitley then began to show the difference in status and slowly began to expose the holes. More goals were conceded but NO HEADS dropped we kept going at our task and all the way to the final whistle we were creating chances – some of which you wonder how didn’t that go in.

A special mention to Watts in goal who has had a hard time of it lately but today pulled off some outstanding saves.

MOM – Miller

From Marc and myself - thank you very much today boys you were better than the result suggests.
